Meet a Wildcat Connecting Research to Real-World Change

Andrew is ready to graduate and continue changing the community and world around him for the better.

For Andrew, the ��ɫ��Ӱ has never been just a place to earn a degree, it's been a place to connect people, ideas, and communities in meaningful ways.

Growing up in Tucson, Andrew felt he already had a connection to the ��ɫ��Ӱ. Friends, family, and faculty connections made the U of A feel familiar long before he ever stepped into a classroom, but becoming a student himself created an entirely different perspective. He felt he became more immersed in the Tucson community, which shaped much of his college experience. From research and leadership to travel and community engagement, Andrew made a real impact on campus.

Turning Research Into Action

One of the most impactful experiences of Andrew’s time at ��ɫ��Ӱ began during his very first semester through the Tucson Poverty Project in the School of Sociology.

What began as a course focused on interviewing people experiencing poverty in ��ɫ��Ӱ evolved into something much bigger. Since then, much of Andrew’s academic work has centered around understanding poverty, public policy, and how research can directly influence communities.

Throughout the project, Andrew contributed to policy writing and presentations that were shared with university leadership, including the president's office, the provost, and the dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.

For him, the experience showed how academic research can go beyond the classroom into addressing real world challenges.

One story that stuck with him from the Tucson Poverty Project was when a fellow student interviewed a recent U of A alumnus who had been a participant in the project years earlier, but has since fallen into poverty themselves. The experience challenged assumptions about who can fall into poverty and reinforced how complex of an issue it is.

“It's an illusion to think you're immune to poverty,” Andrew said.

His work has also altered the way he thinks about solutions. He observed how poverty, homelessness, healthcare, food insecurity, and crime are all deeply interconnected, and that meaningful change takes patience, collaboration, and long-term investment.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Outside of Tucson, Andrew has looked for opportunities to better understand communities and cultures around the world. Through the CIELO program, he traveled to Costa Rica, where he explored environmental sustainability, community engagement, and the impacts of climate change from a completely different perspective than the Sonoran Desert. As someone who grew up in ��ɫ��Ӱ, seeing the effects of climate change in a wet environment expanded the way he viewed the world and his studies.

Additionally, the experience helped reshape how he thought about travel and human connection. It showed him how the world is not that scary of a place, and people are more similar than we often think.

The CIELO program was actually Andrew's second time visiting Costa Rica. During a previous trip with the Eller College of Management, he worked on a coffee farm in the mountains. Returning with CIELO gave him a broader perspective and allowed him to connect more deeply with nature and local communities.

Andrew explored Costa Rica through coastal excursions, hiking, and white water rafting. He also participated in community service projects, helping maintain a local school by painting walls, cleaning classrooms, and pouring concrete. In Puerto Carrillo, he joined efforts to remove microplastics from the beach while spending time with and learning from local residents. What stood out to him most was the sense of happiness, calm, and connection that seemed deeply rooted in the local communities.

Leadership, Balance, and Building Community

Andrew's time at ��ɫ��Ӱ has stretched far beyond academics and travel. Alongside his research projects, he served as a student assistant in the Honors college and ran for student body president three times.

Balancing many commitments hasn’t always been easy. Andrew credits calendaring, prioritization, and learning when to say “no” as some of the most important skills he's developed during college.

At the center of all the work Andrew does is a desire to make the university more connected, welcoming, and accessible for students. Whether it's helping students find scholarship opportunities, encouraging peers to get involved, or connecting people with campus resources, he hopes his impact lasts beyond graduation. He encourages students to get involved, as there are endless opportunities to take advantage of.

For students hoping to make a difference themselves, Andrew believes there's no single right way to create change.

“You can make a difference in any way that feels right to you,” he said. “Big or small.”

Old Main

Opened in 1891, more than 20 years before ��ɫ��Ӱ became a state, this building in the heart of campus was originally home to classrooms, a library, offices, and dorms. Today it remains a symbol of the university’s rich history.

Alexander Berger Memorial Fountain

The fountain in front of Old Main was dedicated on January 31, 1920. Students, faculty, townspeople, and military came out to honor the University’s World War I dead, including Berger’s nephew, and to greet the guest of honor, General of the Armies of the United States John J. Pershing.

The President’s Pond

Known around campus as Turtle Pond, this water feature and surrounding gardens sit on the site of the former University President’s home and now offer a peaceful retreat for students and visitors alike.

USS ��ɫ��Ӱ Memorial & the Mall

A living collection of trees planted throughout the nearly 400 acres of open spaces on the main ��ɫ��Ӱ campus in Tucson, the Campus Arboretum serves as a living laboratory promoting stewardship and conservation of urban trees through research, education, outreach, and example.

McKale Center at ALKEME Arena

Home to Wildcats basketball, McKale Center at ALKEME Arena is a hub of excitement and school spirit. Named for the late J.F. "Pop" McKale, who served as athletic director and coach from 1914 to 1957, the arena hosts crowds of nearly 14,000 for games and special events.

Casino del Sol Stadium

Casino del Sol Stadium hosts Wildcats football as well as major annual events, including Spring Commencement and the ��ɫ��Ӱ Bowl. Bringing together students, alumni, and fans, it’s a centerpiece for athletic excellence and campus celebrations.

Bear Down Building

Named after the famous last words of athlete John "Button" Salmon, Bear Down Building hosted basketball games until 1973, served as a military training site during WWII, and was repurposed in 2021 as a hub for the Student Success District.

Finding My Home Away From Home at the ��ɫ��Ӱ

Coming to the ��ɫ��Ӱ as an out-of-state student was both exciting and a little intimidating. I knew I wanted more than just a college; I wanted a place that would feel like a home away from home. After visiting the campus my senior year of high school during Admitted Student Day, the choice was immediately clear. The warm sunshine, palm trees, and especially the unforgettable pink sunsets made it feel like a place where anyone and everyone could thrive. From the moment I started talking with students and staff, I could feel the pride and sense of community that made the campus feel instantly welcoming. Looking back now, committing to the U of A was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Why I Chose the U of A

Two prerequisites I had for my university of choice were the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people, and the ability to get involved in a wide range of activities. At the U of A, I absolutely found both. I have made connections with people from all different backgrounds, with completely different interests, making my experience here just that much more meaningful.

While I wanted to attend a big school, I didn't want to feel like just another number. I wanted a university that offered the energy of a large campus and the support of a smaller one. That balance is one of U of A’s strongest qualities. Through Think Tank tutoring, faculty office hours, and the overall care faculty has for students, help really is just one call away. Our drop in advising center is always a huge help when I need quick, reliable support with my course schedules, credit requirements, or financial plan. When classes get challenging or if you just need some guidance, the Wildcat community is there to support you.

What It’s Really Like To Be a Wildcat

Coming into college, I didn’t have everything figured out for my future, and honestly, I still don’t. But instead of feeling pressure to decide, I’ve felt encouraged to explore. With more than 150 majors, countless clubs, and so many unique general education courses, U of A has given me the flexibility to try different things and engage in new interests.

My Campus Job

Since starting my first year, I've gotten involved in unexpected ways that have shaped my experience tremendously. One of the most impactful roles I've taken on is working as a Student Writer and Content Creator for U of A’s Enrollment Marketing, Communication, and Events department. In this position, I help create admissions materials, interview other students, write for website pieces, and more, all while growing my knowledge of marketing and writing overall. It’s been such a rewarding opportunity to help tell the stories of other Wildcats while also sharing my perspective as a current student. This position has grown my connection with the wildcat community tremendously. I love learning about unique students every day.

Academic Opportunities

I've also had the opportunity to work as a preceptor for the courses MIS 111 and MIS 112, where I assist with grading student assignments. This has been a great way to continue my learning and academic engagement, while also gaining a new perspective on the classroom experience. It’s taught me about responsibility, attention to detail, and how much goes on behind the scenes in a college course.

Being a part of the W.A. Franke Honors College has surrounded me with other motivated and curious students. Honors courses and opportunities push me to think more deeply and engage fully in my classes. Additionally, the small class size of honors courses makes it easier to collaborate with peers and seek one-on-one help from professors. The first honors class I took, Honors English, immediately gratified my decision to join the honors program as it was very discussion-based, and just the right amount of challenging.

Sorority Life

Outside of academics and work, being a part of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority has played a huge role in finding my people here. Through my membership, I've met an incredible group of women who are supportive, driven, and who share a genuine care for each other. Being involved in Fraternity and Sorority Programs has been an amazing way to be a part of something much bigger than myself both globally and in the Tucson community, through raising money for our national philanthropy, Girls on the Run, and providing service to various Tucson organizations.

Why the U of A Was the Right Choice for Me

Looking back, choosing the ��ɫ��Ӱ gave me exactly what I was hoping for, even before I fully knew what that looked like. I've gained countless opportunities, a strong support system, lifelong friends, and most importantly, a place where I know that I belong. As a previously nervous out-of-state student, this means everything to me. Somewhere between the sunshine, the sunsets, and the people, the ��ɫ��Ӱ became more than a school, it became my home.

Introducing the New American Academy of Medicine & Surgery Club

“I ultimately chose to attend the ��ɫ��Ӱ over my ‘dream school’ because I realized that everything I wanted from a higher education was offered here. I understood that I had control over my academic path, and rather than feeling intimidated, I felt like I was in charge of my future.”

Intrigued by anatomy and physiology since she was a child, Sasha ultimately decided to pursue Physiology and Medical Sciences in college. After attending Admitted Student Day at the ��ɫ��Ӱ, she knew this was the ideal school choice for her.

“Admitted Student Day opened my eyes to the opportunities given to undergraduate students: courses tailored to our interests, an emphasis on interdisciplinary education, countless research programs, labs, and chances for undergraduates to engage with the College of Medicine … an inherently flexible path to my degree. And what felt most important was the sense of support and encouragement I felt from the students and professors at the U of A.”

While learning and growing through her studies, Sasha is also enhancing her college journey, and that of her pre-health peers, by turning ideas into action with that support. Sasha is the founding president of the American Academy of Medicine & Surgery (AAMS) club on campus.

AAMS Club

“AAMS is an interactive club that gives students a greater understanding of medicine,” said Sasha, “not only through learning physiology, but through engaging directly with the technical skills and practices of various medical professions.”

“While AAMS has a strong medical and surgical emphasis, the club engages with a wide range of medical professionals (from family practice physicians to medical device salesmen) who expose members to many aspects of healthcare,” she added. “All pre-health majors are welcome to join if they find interactive, hands-on learning both engaging and valuable.”

The Goal of AAMS

“The hands-on nature of AAMS is intentional and foundational to how the club operates,” said Sasha. “Each meeting is built around an active skill or task rather than passive observation, so members are consistently engaging with the material instead of just hearing about it. Background explanations are there to give students context for what they are doing before they begin practicing themselves.”

“The club provides a low-pressure environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and improve without fear of judgment,” Sasha added. “This approach helps build confidence and familiarity with technical skills that many students do not encounter until much later in their education.”

How Sasha Put Her Idea Into Action

Inspired by the hands-on learning she received from surgeons and physicians through the AAMS Basic and Intermediate Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Summer Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Sasha wanted to form a club at the ��ɫ��Ӱ for learning hands-on surgical skills of even more specialties.

She did her research and shared the concept with professors, classmates, and friends. She quickly realized that they wanted to see this club happen, too.

“My physiology professor believed that I could make it work and offered real advice and encouragement, which is why I chose him to be the club’s faculty advisor,” said Sasha. “Once I had a team in place, the idea was no longer hypothetical. It became something real that I could build here.”

AAMS Launches with a Highly Successful Suture Training Workshop

The first ��ɫ��Ӱ AAMS meeting launched in September 2025, and featured a suture training workshop.

“Members practiced suturing at their own pace while receiving guidance and feedback,” said Sasha. “Beyond learning how to suture, we all got to meet many pre-health students and have a good time with good music, snacks, and conversation.”

Experiential Learning Is Key to the AAMS Club

“Hands-on learning helps bridge the gap between physiology and practice,” said Sasha. “Rather than viewing medicine as something abstract or distant, members begin to understand how scientific concepts translate into real clinical skills. Over time, this structure encourages growth, consistency, and active participation, reinforcing the idea that meaningful learning happens when students are fully involved in the process.”

More Ways the U of A Helps Sasha Work Toward Her Academic and Career Goals

“��ɫ��Ӱ has challenged me to take ownership of my education and professional growth,” said Sasha. “Being surrounded by efficient, respectful, and highly invested students and mentors showed me what it looks like to approach medicine with dedication, integrity, and consistency.”

Sasha’s dedication applies not only in starting a club to support experiential learning outside of the classroom, but inside her classroom learning environment, as well.

“This past semester, taking biochemistry taught me to value dedication,” she shared. “I learned that earning strong grades sometimes requires real struggle and persistence. I fought tooth and nail for an A, and that experience was incredibly rewarding. It strengthened my confidence, reinforced my work ethic, and taught me to trust myself when facing difficult material.”

That strong ��ɫ��Ӱ support system that drew her to the U of A also played a part in her growth. Sasha said she is truly thankful to her board members and U of A faculty and friends.

“Being in such a large and interconnected university helped me recognize that success depends on more than academic performance,” Sasha said. “Learning how to communicate effectively, show mutual respect to faculty and peers, and remain consistent and dependable were skills I developed over time. These are qualities I built through experience, and they have shaped how I approach both my education and my path towards medicine.”

Through the AAMS club, Sasha brings skill development, interactive experiences, support, and teamwork to an extended pre-health community at the U of A, paying forward what she has learned and the support she has received while creating her own meaningful college journey. We asked her:

What advice would you give new students considering coming to the ��ɫ��Ӱ?

“My best piece of advice is to build systems that help you start and stay consistent.”

“When something feels big and overwhelming, break it down into smaller, manageable pieces,” advises Sasha. “Starting a task or project is often the hardest part, but once you break it down into smaller pieces, the momentum will keep you going and your brain will aim to finish what you started.”

Stay organized

“Keeping an agenda or using tools like Google Calendar and Motion helps turn your assignments into clear steps instead of a large mess of work. Having a structured plan allows you to focus your energy on taking the next obvious step forward, rather than feeling overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done at once.”

Stay focused

“Staying focused matters just as much as planning. Eliminating distractions, especially staying off your phone when you can, creates a better environment to concentrate. Consistent, focused work is more effective than hours wasted on multitasking (which doesn't truly exist when studying, it’s just task-switching). To learn effectively, you need to engage with the material deeply rather than passively listening to lectures or videos, even though it seems more efficient or convenient (it's not!)”

“Use your online tools with better intentions.”

“Study tools like Anki can support long-term retention when used consistently, and AI/LLMs like ChatGPT should be used to enhance and support your thinking, not replace it. The goal is to stay actively engaged in your learning and trust yourself to work through challenges.”

New Degrees & Opportunities for Wildcats in 2026

This year, as always, there’s a lot happening at the ��ɫ��Ӱ! Below are just a few of the new opportunities available to undergraduate students joining us in the fall of 2026.

New Undergraduate Degrees

BS in Cyber Operations

The Bachelor of Science in Cyber Operations, offered both on campus and online at the ��ɫ��Ӱ, prepares students to become highly skilled professionals through emphasis areas in both Artificial Intelligence and Security. As one of only 23 programs nationwide designated by the NSA as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations, the program equips students with the skills to think both like attackers and defenders, gaining experience in virtual labs, simulating real world cyber threats in a safe, controlled environment. Students develop expertise in areas such as malware analysis, penetration testing, network security, and low-level programming, while simultaneously applying legal and ethical principles to complex cybersecurity challenges.

The Artificial Intelligence emphasis focuses on vulnerability analysis and simulated cyber operations. Graduates are prepared to pursue roles in high demand such as cybersecurity analysts, penetration testers, cloud security specialists, and digital forensics analysts with leading employers including government agencies, defense contractors, and Fortune 500 companies.

BS in Genetics and Genomics

Another new major at the ��ɫ��Ӱ is Genetics and Genomics, from the College of Science, offering students an interdisciplinary foundation in how genes shape life. The program blends molecular genetics, human genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and genetic epidemiology, giving students both the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to understand inheritance and genome function across living systems. Students engage in hands-on lab courses and course-related research opportunities, allowing them to build expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. This major prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, medicine, genetic counseling, forensics, agriculture, conservation, patent law, science policy, and science communication.

BS in Agriculture and Applied Economics

The new Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Applied Economics from the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences brings together the former Agribusiness Economics & Management and Environmental Water & Resource Economics degrees into a single program with two tracks: Agribusiness Economics & Management (AEM) and Environmental Economics & Policy (EEP). This degree blends business, economics, and public policy, giving students a hybrid education that connects management skills with agriculture, food systems, environmental issues, and policymaking. Students build strong foundations in economic analysis, business strategy, and policy evaluation, while simultaneously participating in hands-on experience in data science and analytics. Graduates are well prepared for leadership roles in divisions such as food, finance, energy, agriculture, hospitality, and government, where they analyze economic conditions, manage organizations, and help shape public policy.

BS in Integrated Business Engineering

Also new in fall of 2026, the ��ɫ��Ӱ will offer ��ɫ��Ӱ’s first and only undergraduate Integrated Business Engineering degree program. The new Bachelor of Science in IBE combines the expertise of faculty from the College of Engineering and Eller College of Management to provide students with the opportunity to develop a technical engineering mindset along with strong business acumen.

IBE Program Director Dr. Michael Kwinn said the skills acquired through the new IBE degree program – from engineering design to foundational business skills like presentation, leadership, and ethics – can be valuable to any industry, translating to jobs in a wide variety of fields, from finance and banking to aerospace engineering and automaking.

BA in Public Relations

Starting fall semester 2026, the ��ɫ��Ӱ’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will offer a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations. This program will develop skills in:

Strategic Planning
Social media
Media relations
Crisis communications
Event planning
Campaign management
Public relations writing

The program will also emphasize the importance of ethics, critical thinking, and research.

Graduating with a BA in Public Relations will prepare you to work in PR agencies and departments, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, educational settings, and more.

New Club: American Academy of Medicine & Surgery (AAMS)

If you’d like to explore medicine, develop real clinical skills, and build the confidence to thrive in healthcare careers, the new American Academy of Medicine and Surgery (AAMS) club on campus may be for you.

Inspired by a UCLA Surgical Skills summer program, Sasha Sher, a Physiology & Medical Sciences major at the U of A, created the AAMS club for students with a curiosity about physiology and medicine and an interest in hands-on education in these areas. Open to all pre-health majors, the club offers surgical simulations and physician-led workshops.

The first AAMS meeting in September 2025 featured a suture training workshop led by U of A College of Medicine-Tucson medical students.

Students admitted to our Main Campus for fall 2026 and their families are invited to attend any of three Admitted Student Days, this year. Admitted Student Day is a fun day celebrating your admittance to the ��ɫ��Ӱ and introducing you to campus and available student resources. Graduating senior Aaliyah’s guide to a successful college journey

My name is Aaliyah, and I’m from Maui, Hawaii! Although I’m a current English major, I initially chose the ��ɫ��Ӱ after being accepted into the W.A. Franke Honors College as a Veterinary Science student. I chose the U of A for its affordability and academic programs offered. My favorite part of being a Wildcat is the incredibly diverse social environment we have, both in and out of the classroom.

1. College is a time for you to change your mind … many times

The reality of being a college freshman is often completely different from what is imagined during high school years. Our minds are changing, and as we acclimate to a new environment of college life, we may realize that our aspirations have changed, we are interested in new things, or we want to try something new. College is the perfect place to look into new career paths and try other academic pathways that you're curious about in life.

As a first-year W.A. Franke Honors student who was also initially enrolled as a Veterinary Science major in the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences, I had the opportunity to delve into my academics in a small classroom environment, which supported my success in school. I soon realized, however, that I wasn’t enjoying the content of my work, and after looking into other possible future career factors, I decided to change my major.

This was a huge deal for me, as I was set upon becoming a Veterinarian for several years during high school. Nevertheless, as an English major, I am content in believing that I made the right decision that aligned with my personal interests and academic curiosity. Never be afraid to talk to your advisors and professors about a possible major change if you’ve thought about it and want more out of your college experience!

2. Go down the rabbit hole of your extracurricular interests

Finding a sense of community can be difficult as a first-year student. ��ɫ��Ӱ holds annual Club Fair and Bash at the Rec events to help students learn more about on-campus clubs, student organizations, and other extracurricular activities.

As a freshman, I attended both events and joined my a cappella group, Notoriety! There were so many clubs to choose from, and I was able to speak with members of leadership to find out more about specific groups. Ultimately, I chose to pursue my passion for singing, and three years later, I was President of the group when we made it to Finals in New York City.

I recommend going down the rabbit hole when it comes to your extracurricular interests. The university offers so many wonderful opportunities for students to make friends and create meaningful communities that serve as fun outlets. Stay updated with on-campus events and be bold in pursuing what interests you.

3. Make use of the beautiful outdoors

As I near the end of my undergraduate journey, I realize just how calming the outdoor campus spaces are in helping with my health and wellness with school. Classes require lots of time to study, read, and research, so I find it helpful to be outside in nature as much as I can.

I enjoy places like the Forbes Building Courtyard area, with its pretty flowers, trees, and natural verdure, when I’m looking for creative inspiration for class. I also like to sit outside the Main Library, near the water fountain, when I have a lot of reading to do for class. There’s also Highland Bowl, which has a nice grassy area to lie beneath the sun and study.

The U of A has such beautiful outdoor spaces for the students and community. When you have the chance, take a stroll or find a nice spot outside to get some work done.

First Look: Introducing the state’s first undergraduate degree combining business and engineering

In fall of 2026, the ��ɫ��Ӱ will offer ��ɫ��Ӱ’s first and only undergraduate Integrated Business Engineering degree program. The new Bachelor of Science in IBE combines the expertise of our world-class faculty from the College of Engineering and Eller College of Management – both laser-focused on preparing workforce-ready graduates – and will provide students like you with the opportunity to develop a technical engineering mindset along with strong business acumen.

“As things get faster and technology advances, it’s pulling disciplines together,” said Dr. Kwinn. “Now, we need to have engineers understand business and business experts understand engineering.”

The new Integrated Business Engineering undergraduate program unites the expertise of these two critical fields, engineering and business, preparing you to become a vital contributor in global tech industries looking for leaders with knowledge in both technical concept design and business vision. Additionally, a BS in IBE can prepare you for your own unique entrepreneurial venture.

Expert faculty from the ��ɫ��Ӱ’s College of Engineering and Eller College of Management worked hard to bring together a variety of engineering programs with top-ranked business, entrepreneurship, and finance offerings for this new degree offering.

“This is a true joint effort,” emphasized Dr. Kwinn, who was excited to work with Larry Head, PhD, Professor of Systems and Industrial Engineering and Director of the Craig M. Berge Engineering Design Program, and Mark Peterson, PhD, Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Eller College of Management.

Together, they’ve set the goal for IBE programming to offer a fairly even split of courses in engineering and foundational business studies.

“The program will offer approximately 40% engineering courses, 40% business courses, and 20% project-based classes that combine both,” said Dr. Kwinn.

In addition, as an IBE student, you’ll hear from speakers from a broad range of business and engineering communities and participate in hands-on learning opportunities, solidly preparing you for current careers with authentic insights and practice in real-world problem-solving.

Hands-on Learning Opportunities

Dr. Kwinn explained that a first-year project within the IBE degree program might involve learning about system design and business plans, finishing with building a product and creating a business plan to go along with it.

Sophomore projects could involve developing a technical solution for an engineering customer’s specific problem one semester, and working with a not-for-profit organization second semester.

Your senior year will include a year-long capstone project developing an advanced prototype and creating a working business plan.

“In some cases this could turn into the student’s own business,” added Dr. Kwinn.

Potential Career Outcomes

Dr. Kwinn said the skills acquired through the new IBE degree program, from engineering design to foundational business skills like presentation, leadership, and ethics, can be valuable to any industry, translating to jobs in a wide variety of fields, from finance and banking to aerospace engineering and automaking.

5 Reasons I’m Thriving 13,000 km from Home

There are a lot of reasons students from all over the world choose to study at the ��ɫ��Ӱ. But let’s go beyond the stats and spotlight a current student experience.

Sadman, a Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) major from Rangpur, Bangladesh, shared why he chose the ��ɫ��Ӱ, and the top five reasons he’s flourishing here.

1. Academic Excellence

“I chose the ��ɫ��Ӱ for its mix of academic excellence, especially CSE as a major,” said Sadman.

CSE at the U of A provides students with a strong foundation in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning with courses spanning theory, systems, hardware and applications. Students complete projects and research using technology, tools, languages, and methodologies in a range of applications. They graduate with skills to lead in one of the fastest-growing fields, with AI-related jobs expected to grow 23% by 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“��ɫ��Ӱ has been the perfect launchpad for my academic and career goals,” stated Sadman. “My engineering courses have given me a strong foundation in computing, and opportunities like working in International Admissions and collaborating with other departments have helped me discover my passion for media and communication.”

Looking beyond degree programs, Sadman appreciated the research opportunities and the diverse and supportive campus culture of the U of A.

“The U of A provides flexibility, diversity, and real-world opportunities,” he said. “The top tier research, strong international support, and welcoming campus culture made me confident I could grow here, both as a student and as a person.”

2. World-Class Faculty

“But what’s made the biggest difference is the people,” Sadman added.

“The professors and grad students I’ve met here have been my mentors, always ready to guide me, encourage me, and challenge me to do better. And my department head has been a true beacon of light, guiding me and reminding me why I started this journey in the first place.”

3. Strong International Support

As an international student who journeyed thousands of miles from his hometown, Sadman was grateful for the many avenues of support and community he found at the U of A. The diverse student body, sports community, and cultural resources on campus all helped him connect and thrive.

“U of A has been like a passport to the world for me,” commented Sadman. “I’ve made friends from so many countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Every conversation is a cultural exchange, and that’s helped me grow in ways I never expected. That cultural exchange is truly my favorite part.”

He also found community through sports, especially soccer, he said.

“At the South Rec, I met students from the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America who shared the same passion, and we bonded instantly over the game.”

“On top of that, joining the Bangladeshi Student Association connected me to my Bengali community here,” added Sadman. “Most countries have their own student associations, so I encourage new Wildcats to reach out to their regional groups; it’s one of the fastest ways to feel at home.”

In turn, Sadman has advice for international students looking for support and connection on campus.

“My biggest advice for new international students is simple: explore everything.”

“Your first year is the perfect time to get out there, attend every event you can, and take advantage of all the opportunities the campus has to offer,” Sadman shared.

He noted that some of the most helpful resources for him have been:

Think Tank, the university’s centralized academic support center offering tutoring, supplemental instruction, a writing center, and test prep.
South Rec Aquatics, “for being the ultimate chill spot to beat the Tucson heat (and stay in shape).”
The Main Library’s free snacks for finals for fueling those all-nighters.
The Campus Pantry, for making sure every Wildcat is taken care of.
SafeRide, a free transportation service that offers an alternative to walking alone at night on and around campus.
Bartlett Student Success Center; “It’s like a hub for new students, with events, mixers, and peer mentors who can really elevate your university experience.”

4. Welcoming Campus Culture

“What I love most about the U of A campus is how alive it feels,” said Sadman. “You can stroll from a peaceful, palm-lined spot perfect for studying straight into the middle of a buzzing event or pep rally. There’s this perfect blend of calm and energy that keeps you inspired.”

The energy picks up on game days, he noted, and with NCAA Division 1 sports teams plus ZonaZoo, one of the largest student sections in college sports, that’s no surprise to Wildcats.

“On game days, the whole campus transforms; you can feel the excitement in the air before you even see the stadium,” said Sadman. “The energy, the sea of red and blue, the chants; it’s something I’ll cherish forever. It’s not just about the sport; it’s about feeling like you are part of one big Wildcat family. That’s the Wildcat spirit, where everyone’s part of the same story.”

Sadman works on campus, too. He found a convenient and enjoyable on-campus job through Handshake, the free online career hub used at the ��ɫ��Ӱ. He started out by volunteering, and was later hired as an Outreach Student Assistant for International Admissions.

“In this role, I wear many hats,” he said. “The best part? The satisfaction of helping new students get admitted to the ��ɫ��Ӱ, guiding them through the process, and sharing my own experiences to make their journey easier. Knowing I might be the reason someone feels confident enough to say ‘Yes’ to U of A? That’s the kind of impact that sticks with you.”

5. Warm Tucson Environment

Sadman added that the warm and welcoming atmosphere extends beyond the ��ɫ��Ӱ campus, into the city that surrounds it.

“What I enjoy most about Tucson is the combination of friendly people, amazing food, and endless outdoor adventures,” he said. “The mountains here are perfect for hiking and camping, and the local food scene is always a treat. But my absolute favorite? The sunsets. No matter how busy the day gets, watching the sky turn into a painting every evening is something I’ll never get tired of.”

To Sum It Up …

Sadman shared that this mix of skills, experiences, and genuine support he’s experienced as an international student at the U of A has shown him how he can blend his passions – sports, media, and technology – into a future career as a data analyst or cybersecurity expert, all while feeling like a part of the larger Wildcat family. This, in turn, will bring him full circle.

“In the long run, I hope to pursue my master’s degree and use my experience to create a meaningful impact back home in Bangladesh's tech industry.”

We host more than 4,000 international students and scholars from all over the world at the ��ɫ��Ӱ.

What’s it feel like to study abroad and find community here at the U of A? We asked Arshia, a junior Medicine major and W.A. Franke Honors Wildcat who lived in Iran and Turkey before coming to the United States. He shared his experiences as an international student navigating the ��ɫ��Ӱ.

Why did you choose to pursue your degree at the ��ɫ��Ӱ?

To be honest, the ��ɫ��Ӱ atmosphere, the story behind the words "Bear Down", the facilities of campus – such as the large swimming pool – and the closeness to California, where I have some family, as well as the scholarship offer, were strong reasons to choose U of A, for me.

What do you like about the U of A campus?

The U of A campus is very beautiful, and I like the super helpful staff and student communities. Additionally, I love how I can easily walk or use my bike to reach wherever I want on campus.

It’s a balanced life of working hard and playing hard. I love the freedom that we have here, and it’s a simulation of the future world, the world that we experience here as a higher quality of living in comparison to any other place, which we will be able to take with us to the future world after graduation.

What do you enjoy about Tucson?

Tucson is a beautiful city. I mostly enjoy seeing the mountains, the beautiful stars in the sky, the Monsoon season’s heavy rains, and the cacti that make the city special to me. In my hometown, Tehran, I don’t have these experiences.

Why did the W.A. Franke Honors College appeal to you?

When I learned about the Franke Honors College, the exceptional, smaller community appealed to me as a first-year student who was new to the university, city, state of ��ɫ��Ӱ, and the United States. The Franke Honors College provided me with the opportunity of closer support of the staff, and allowed me to be with enthusiastic people putting in effort and focusing on their goals. In short, the Franke Honors College appealed to me because it created a well-prepared atmosphere for growth and encouraged lifelong learning.

What is your goal after graduation?

While I could use what I learned after getting my bachelor’s for working in research or teaching science, I’m thinking of preparing for medical school and being a doctor.

How has the ��ɫ��Ӱ helped you work toward your academic and career goals?

��ɫ��Ӱ is a blessing for me. From the first day I set foot as a first-year student till now, I have had unbelievable support from the U of A. They started with the welcome ceremonies and continued by offering truly helpful resources. For example, by introducing the pre-med advisor so that I don’t feel lost on my way to medical school; the Think Tank to be able to solve my problems with the least stress about what I wasn’t able to comprehend in class; or making office hours available so that I can ask questions in a more personalized atmosphere. On the other hand, offering support to chill with fun activities that the ASUA or deans of students offer, such as Dog Days with the Dean.

How has the Franke Honors College helped you work toward your academic and career goals?

The Franke Honors College is a very interesting community. It gives me enthusiasm to continue my good work and be a lifelong learner, and makes it possible for me to go deeper into the details of academic topics related to my major that interest me. The ability to choose classes early makes it easier to choose classes that I really need, while the great advice of my honors advisor lets me know the direction I should move in and what to expect. The honors seminar gave me a chance to use what I learned in a real-world simulation, practicing it practically.

What advice would you give new International students at the ��ɫ��Ӱ?

My advice to International students contains my personal experience and different points of view.

First and foremost, ask questions. Ask good questions from the Support, Outreach, Success SOS tables that are in the Bartlett Academic Success Center (BASC) building as well as the Bear Down Building, located near the main grassy area on campus.
Don’t wait if you are experiencing challenges. For example, get help from resources like CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services), as needed.
You will find friends, but it takes some time.
- Try to participate in fun activities on campus that you will see at specific times on the campus grassy area, which are for us students to recharge and continue our educational path stronger afterwards.
- Balance yourself by making relations with other international and domestic students while being connected to your own roots, as this will decrease the chance of being homesick.
Last but not least, if you get homesick, try going to places that make you feel better. For example, during my first semester, I had food at a Persian restaurant in Tucson, to feel more like home, or visited a Turkish restaurant near campus because it made me feel better, as I lived in both Iran and Turkey before coming to the United States.

Applying for Financial Aid to Fund Your Education

Tuition, housing, school supplies and textbooks – there’s a lot that goes into paying for college. Fortunately, you have many options when it comes to making your ��ɫ��Ӱ education more affordable.

One of the first steps to determine the financial aid you are eligible for is to complete your FAFSA. It’s free, it’s quick, and it gives you access to the most financial aid opportunities. But what exactly is it? And how do you fill it out? Don’t worry, we have all your FAFSA questions covered.

What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an online application that you should submit each year to apply for financial aid that can help provide support for your college educational expenses.

Where does FAFSA money come from?

The U.S. government funds all federal student aid programs. More than 13 million students complete the FAFSA yearly, and the government awards more than $120 billion in grants, work-study, and loans.

In addition, filing the FAFSA allows the ��ɫ��Ӱ to determine if you are eligible for other forms of financial aid including institutional grants and even some scholarships. This aid is funded various ways, including by the state of ��ɫ��Ӱ, the university, donors and private organizations.

How much money could I receive?

The amount of financial aid you could be eligible for depends on a number of factors like your cost of attendance, family’s size, income, and other details.

How do I complete the FAFSA?

Start by heading to studentaid.gov. You will be prompted to create an FSA ID with a username and password. Once your FSA ID is set up, you will be guided through a series of questions to complete the FAFSA.

Before submitting your form, you’ll be asked to include information about your colleges of interest. This is where you should include the ��ɫ��Ӱ’s school code: 001083.

What do I need to complete the FAFSA?

There are a few items that you will need when completing the FAFSA, including:

Verified account username and password (FSA ID).
Your social security number.
Driver’s license (if you have one).
Some financial documents like your family’s latest tax return.
Income and asset information (if required).

If you are a dependent student, as determined by the FAFSA, your parent or guardian must create their own FSA ID to sign your FAFSA to submit it. They’ll also need to ensure their financial documents are ready to submit.

When is the 2025-26 FAFSA deadline?

The priority filing date for the 2025–2026 FAFSA is April 1, 2025. Filing your FAFSA by the Priority Filing Date will make sure your application is reviewed for eligibility for additional types of aid like the ��ɫ��Ӱ Promise Grant, ��ɫ��Ӱ Native Scholars Grant or the Pell Pledge Grant. So, the sooner you complete your FAFSA application, the better!

Your FAFSA form must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central time (CT) on June 30, 2026. Any corrections or updates must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on September 12, 2026.

Do I have to complete the FAFSA every year?

Yes. The FAFSA only applies to one academic year at a time, which means you will have to submit a new one each year you are attending ��ɫ��Ӱ. Make sure to use the same FSA ID every year.

The Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid (OSFA) hosts Filing Your FAFSA Workshops to provide students and families with helpful resources and answer any questions you may have. Spots fill quickly, so be sure to RSVP to the workshop that works for your schedule.
