Your Guide to Attending College In-Person vs. Online

Image
Students working together

Take classes online or in person?

Online learning may be a good option if you鈥檙e looking for flexibility and convenience. If you want interaction and structure, in-person learning may be better. Before deciding, weighing the in-person vs. online modalities is crucial.

Are online classes easier or harder?

While you can mostly work on online coursework at your own pace, you will regularly lack IRL interactions with your professor and fellow students. Even though technological improvements have bridged some of these gaps, the lack of face-to-face interaction and synchronous classes won鈥檛 hold you accountable as much as in-person courses. It might be harder to get support quickly if you鈥檙e confused.

In-person might be right for you if you are looking for:

  • Campus life: In-person learning offers more opportunities for interaction with instructors and other students. If you are looking for the full campus experience, such as attending sporting events, joining in-person clubs, making friends, and living in residence halls, the in-person college experience is your best bet.
  • Networking opportunities: In-person students might have more access to networking opportunities only available to in-person students, such as attending campus events, such as job fairs, or professional opportunities.
  • Structure: In-person students usually experience more structure with mandatory class attendance and in-person support. You thrive in an in-person learning environment if you aren鈥檛 disciplined or work well independently.
  • Technical Advantages: While we鈥檙e moving towards a technology-first society, in-person classes don鈥檛 require a strong internet connection. As an online learner, technical difficulties can be more of a disruption to your learning than it would be for in-person students.

Online learning might be right for you if you are looking for:

  • Flexibility: Are you looking for flexibility in your schedule because you work demanding or odd hours or have other commitments? The benefits of online learning include flexibility and professors who usually understand online students' commitments outside of class. Online classes are also generally condensed to 7.5 weeks, which will be less of a time commitment.
  • Convenience: Online learning can be more convenient than in-person learning, as students don't have to commute to campus or worry about finding parking.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Online learning can be more cost-effective than in-person learning, as students may not have to pay for room and board or other expenses associated with living on campus.
  • Accessibility: Online learning can be more accessible to students with disabilities or other challenges that make it difficult to attend in-person classes.

Conclusion

Deciding on a college is a big decision. Deciding whether an in-person or online program is right for you can be just as big of a decision! Online learning in the United States is on the rise, with nearly 8.5 million U.S. students taking at least some online classes at public higher education institutions. However, as a student, an all-in-person experience could be right for you. Maybe a mix of in-person and online classes is the right recipe for your success. Remember, whichever path you choose, you鈥檒l get the same courses, learn from the same professors, and earn the same diploma from the 黄色电影; your experience will just be different.

How to Convince Your Parents to Let You Go to the 黄色电影

What I did to make sure I came to the 黄色电影

This time of year is time for high school seniors to make big choices. College admissions are coming out, and sometimes your dream school isn鈥檛 the same as your family鈥檚.

Making the choice to attend the 黄色电影 is a huge decision 鈥 especially if you鈥檒l be an out of state student 鈥 but the benefits outweigh the negatives. Here鈥檚 how to convince your family that becoming a Wildcat is the best choice for your future.

黄色电影 Malia Daft

Class of 2025

Major: Communication

Minor(s): Marketing

Hometown: San Diego, California

Why I Chose 黄色电影

Hi, my name鈥檚 Malia! I鈥檓 a sophomore at the 黄色电影, hailing from my hometown of San Diego, California.

I felt a lot of pressure to stay nearby; it was cheaper, closer for my parents to visit, and California is known to have really good schools. Plus, I come from a big family. As the first kid in my family to want to leave my home state of California, going out of state was scary to my parents 鈥 how would they afford college when they have six other kids to think about as well?

While these were legitimate concerns, my heart was drawn to what I had seen of the 黄色电影 鈥 from the green grass on the mall to the red brick buildings, and let鈥檚 not forget the great weather year round.

How I Convinced My Family

My parents were concerned when I said I wanted to go out of state to 黄色电影. Out of state tuition can be pricey, and I鈥檇 never even looked at the school in person (just the website). To further complicate things, I got accepted to the 黄色电影 in fall of 2020, which was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic; due to this, campus was shut down and campus tours were not happening. My family decided we should still make the six-hour drive to Tucson to look at campus to see if I even liked it. Once I stepped foot out of the car, I fell in love.

We walked around campus on a self-guided tour, admiring Old Main and the Mall, and making sure to stop by the college that I was interested in, which at that point was the Eller College of Management for business. My parents also loved the 黄色电影, and the visit helped them to feel a little better about letting me go to school out of state.

Just to be sure, we also visited a few other out-of-state schools including 黄色电影 State University and the University of Hawaii 鈥 Manoa to see what I liked and didn鈥檛. None of them compared to the academics and overall campus life that the 黄色电影 had to offer.

Why You Should Chose the 黄色电影

Even though my parents were impressed after our visit to Tucson, I still had some convincing to do. I started with bragging about Eller, which is a within a Research I institution, and one of the best undergraduate business schools (public) in the United States.

And, Eller is just one of 黄色电影鈥檚 impressive programs. There are more than 150 majors and degrees to choose from.

Examples of Majors

  • Business
  • Nursing
  • Education
  • Physiology

But, it鈥檚 about more than just an education here: Attending the 黄色电影 would give me the opportunity to make connections outside of school with people working in my field. I also would get the stereotypical college experience: Pac-12 sports, Greek life, and a classic college town.

Making College Affordable

When it all came down to it, going out of state still wasn鈥檛 a realistic option until we discovered the financial support offered by the 黄色电影. There are tons of opportunities and scholarships available in . The has so many resources for students to explore to help make attending the 黄色电影 more affordable. I received the Achievement Award as well as a grant, which made going out of state comparable in price to an in-state school.

With all of our research done and lots of support from the 黄色电影, both my family and myself were able to confidently say that my dream school was the best choice 鈥 for all of us.

I committed to the 黄色电影 in the spring of 2021, and with the uncertain times that were still occurring due to Covid, I was eager and excited to attend a new school and meet so many new people.

You鈥檙e Not Alone

Tons of students decide to go out of state for college, whether that be for an amazing U黄色电影 program or to get out of their comfort zone. Here are the top five states where people come from to enjoy a new beginning at the 黄色电影.

Make Tucson Your Home Away from Home

Over the past year, moving away from home to come to school at the 黄色电影 has been a big change. As a sophomore, I catch myself saying I miss home (home being Tucson) while I'm away. And my parents? They鈥檙e beyond happy that I'm excelling in school, making new friends, and enjoying the college experience.

This is more than just a campus: it鈥檚 the place I laugh the most, have the best memories, and the place I call home.
